41st Annual Reunion

Novotel, 19, rue de Zurich, Geneva, Switzerland, 11-13 May 2018

The OVS Organizing Committee and the Members living in and around Geneva are very excited by the prospect of welcoming you, for the first time ever in BAFUNCS history, to Geneva, the European capital of the UN and the Specialized Agencies. Many of you will come and retrace your steps of old, maybe with a bit of nostalgia. Others have no previous links with the City of Calvin but will be impressed by its orderliness and the beauty of the lake front, the quaint character of the old town and the luxury of its shops. The flyer which we hope you have all received by e-mail if you were not at the King’s Lynn Reunion tells you more of what there will be to do for those who can spend a little more time. To top it all, our past and present presidents have been able to persuade Kofi Annan to be our keynote speaker for the Saturday morning, while David Harland, Director of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, is our Sunday morning speaker.

The Reunion will take place in the Novotel (Genève Centre) which is part of the Accor hotel chain (beware, because Geneva has more than one Novotel.) It is located at 19, rue de Zurich, close to the Cornavin main railway station where all trains from the airport stop and in the middle of an area that has cafes, and small shops a few minutes away from the Lake with its lovely promenade. The Novotel is a modern hotel with well-equipped and light rooms. All rooms have a safe, coffee and tea making facilities, minibar (mineral water is free, but other drinks need to be paid for) and a hairdryer. There is free Wi-Fi and toiletries are available in the bathrooms.  The hotel has a spa (free for guests), but no swimming pool. There is free underground parking for all meeting participants, but the garage is of limited height (1.70 m). The main entrance into the Lobby has a few steps down from street level, but there is a lift for those that need it and hotel staff will assist to operate it. All residents will receive a free public transport pass for Geneva from the hotel reception, courtesy of the Geneva Tourist Board. This allows you to use all city public transport including the Mouette Genevoise (the little ferry that goes across the lake from Paquis to Molard ). See also under “Travel” below for free transport into town from the airport on your arrival.

We have been able to negotiate very special prices for the weekend which are considerably lower than the normal UN rate (already lower than normal hotel prices): please see the Registration Form for details. Key points to bear in mind:

  • Rooms must be booked and paid directly to the hotel! This can be done by e-mail to: H3133-SBI@, or by telephone to 0041 22 909 91 02 (from Monday to Friday 10.00 to 17.00 Swiss time), mentioning the BAFUNCS Annual Reunion.
  • Novotel costs must be paid in full by 31 January 2018 to guarantee the prices stated on the Registration Form.
  • Cancellations after 31 January 2018 will not be refunded by the hotel.
  • The administrative charge is not normally refunded.
  • It is essential that you have a good travel insurance that will cover these costs should something unforeseen happen!
  • A city tax of CHF 4 per person per night will be payable to the hotel on departure.
  • Check-in time is 14.00 hrs and check-out time 12.00 hrs. Luggage may be stored on Sunday morning in a small side room by the meeting room.

Bookings after 31 January may be accepted, but no guarantee can be given as to availability of rooms or prices. BAFUNCS members have absolute priority until 31 January 2018, so please book as early as you can. If places are still available after that date, we intend to open registration to serving UN staff and other interested organizations.

Hotel room prices for Thursday night 10 May (B&B) will be CHF 270 for single and CHF 290 for double occupancy; for the Sunday night, 13 May, the B&B rates will be CHF 160 for single and CHF 180 for double occupancy.

CERN – Expected cost CHF 30

The European Centre for Nuclear Research operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world.  During the visit we will learn about the role, focus and objectives of CERN’s work and about the impressive experiments conducted on its premises, including the Large Hadron Collider and its particle detectors. The afternoon programme will include an introductory talk and a visit to 2 experimental areas.  Note: sturdy footwear is obligatory and participants should be able to walk 100 metres and climb stairs.

GUIDED TOUR OF GENEVA – Expected cost CHF 50

This includes a coach trip, a short walk around the old town and a one-hour boat trip on the Lake. It will take in the various UN buildings, the famous flower clock and St. Peter’s Cathedral in the heart of the old city.   Participants not wishing to walk may stay on board the coach and the walkers will join them to drive to the Geneva landing stage for the boat trip.

In addition to the extraordinary collection of watchmaking masterpieces dating from 16th to the 20th centuries, the guided tour will explore the roots of time-measurement and the key events in watchmaking from the antique creations of the 1500s to the founding of Patek Philippe in 1839. The museum is fully equipped with lifts to the three levels.

TRAVEL: We will prepare a travel note nearer the time, but if you plan to come by air, book early while flights are cheap!

When you arrive at Geneva Cointrin airport by plane you can get a free ticket for Geneva public transport (by train, bus or tram) into the centre of town.  The ticket machine is in the luggage pick-up hall.  Tickets are transferable and valid for 80 minutes.
