Advice on Pensions, Taxes and After Service Health Insurance

Pensions

BAFUNCS liaises directly with the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF) on behalf of its members - both beneficiaries and their surviving spouses or family.

BAFUNCS is a member of the Federation of Associations of Former International Civil Servants (FAFICS), a global network of associations of UN retirees which is represented on the United Nations Pension Board.

Tax

The website of His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) contains material which is essential for all those liable to pay UK taxes.  It provides copies of all the forms needed to complete a tax return, along with explanatory texts, and information for those intending to return to the UK.

BAFUNCS Information Note 5, Taxation in the United Kingdom, is updated whenever there are important developments on tax issues.  It provides information for members on Income Tax, the United States – United Kingdom Double Taxation Agreement, National Insurance, Stamp Duty, Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, Council Tax, Vehicle tax, Value Added Tax and Excise Duties.

The Members’ area of the BAFUNCS website hosts a Discussion Forum on UK Taxation of UN Pensions, which has been extensively used by members to reduce the income tax payable on their UN pensions.  Members and their relatives also have access to informal advice on tax and pension issues from fellow members with experience in these areas.

After Service Health Insurance

BAFUNCS supports FAFICS in:

  1. expanding the coverage and benefits of the different organizations’ health insurance plans,

2. promoting best practice, including the representation of retirees on agency health insurance committees

3. exploring the feasibility of long-term care insurance for retirees, either as part of health insurance plans or as a stand-alone arrangement
