London Region Activities

INVITATION TO A CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON  ON WEDNESDAY 13 DECEMBER 2017

Members expressed a desire to go somewhere different for our Christmas lunch this year as we did in 2015. In order to keep prices at an affordable level  it has been decided that a private room is simply too expensive and so a booking has been made which will allow us to sit  together in a convivial atmosphere.

A booking has been made at Cafe Rouge, St Paul's branch at Unit 5, Condor House St Paul's Churchyard, London EC4M 8AY. We will meet at 12.30 pm and lunch will be served at 1pm. A three course lunch is available at £23.95 and drinks will be available to purchase (Glass of Prosecco £5, 2 bottles of wine £25, 5 bottles of beer £15)

The restaurant requires, in advance, our selections for each course and payment. This was the situation in 2015. Members are requested to make their selections from the attached menu and to send them with their booking form and cheque to Tekeste Ghebray Tekie by 5 December.

The Greek Ortthodox Cathedral of the Divine Wisdom - Hagia Sophia

Members of London Region were able to take a tour of this beautiful building on 20 September, guided by one of the Priests, Father Theonas. Afterwards participants moved on to lunch at a nearby Greek restaurant. This was the third in BAFUNCS London Region’s series of visits to architecturally remarkable religious buildings in the capital.

St Sophia’s Cathedral is remarkable architecturally and historically, as well as being famous for its icons and mosaics.  It was designed by a British architect in the Byzantine Revival style, with a dome modelled on the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and was consecrated in 1882.  The lavish interior decoration includes British made mosaics and a screen of icons by a German painter.  The icons are remarkable for having faces which are more pre-Raphaelite than the conventional Greek style.  St Sophia’s was featured recently in the “Divine Designs” series on Channel 5.

Cambridge Region is organizing a visit to Bletchley Park on Thursday, 12 October. Members from other regions are welcome to participate - full details can be found on the CAM page.

Lunches are held at the Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes, 108 Baker Street, London, W1U 6LJ, details of the next event will appear here when available.
